Mourning in the world of cinema: Kirk Douglas dies at 103

A life like that of Kirk Douglas , the eyes of a bright blue and the chiseled jaw that is becomes a trademark, we would have all wanted it. Beautiful and impossible, always one step ahead of injustices, protagonist of unforgettable films that have made the history of cinema, the actor leaves us just when we would have said he would never leave us, wrapped in the warmth of his loved ones and within the warm walls of his home. A 103 made less than two months before, celebrated with his centenary wife Anne she too, Kirk dies on Wednesday accompanied by the affectionate words of her son Michael.

«For the world he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of films, and a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and causes were an inspiration for everyone» he underlines on his Instagram profile.

It is with tremendous sadness that my brothers and I announce that Kirk Douglas left us today at the age of 103. To the world he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and the causes he believed in set a standard for all of us to aspire to. But to me and my brothers Joel and Peter he was simply Dad, to Catherine, a wonderful father-in-law, to his grandchildren and great grandchild their loving grandfather, and to his wife Anne, a wonderful husband. Kirk's life was well lived, and he leaves a legacy in film that will endure for generations to come, and a history as a renowned philanthropist who worked to aid the public and bring peace to the planet. Let me end with the words I told him on his last birthday and which will always remain true. Dad- I love you so much and I am so proud to be your son. #KirkDouglas

Douglas, on the other hand, never gave up on giving up. Not even after that helicopter crash that could have knocked him out in the nineties and which, instead, made him stronger than before, bringing out his soul as a tireless fighter, a man of one piece ready for anything. Three Oscar nominations, a narrow honorary statuette three hands in 1996 and a curriculum that boasts more than eighty films before retiring from the cinema in 2004 : Kirk lived his life by bundling dozens of iconic roles. From the Spartacus of Imperial Rome to the Ulysses of Homeric Greece; from the Van Gogh for which he won the New York Film Critics Award to the journalist protagonist of Ace up his sleeve. A piece of the history of cinema goes away with Kirk , one of the sentinels who held up the name of the old guard and who saw the industry change before him, assisting helpless at the landing of the streaming platforms – the son Michael stars in the series The Kominsky method of Netflix – and the outbreak of the #MeToo movement.

After working as a janitor at St. Lawrence University and moving to New York thanks to a scholarship, Kirk delights in radio and theater with the dream of breaking through in that world that is less than twenty years old later he would consecrate him as one of the most sparkling talents of his constellation: he arrives in Hollywood with his first name, Issur Danielovitch Demsky , born in Amsterdam on December 9 1916 from a family of Russian Jewish emigrants, and we come out as Kirk Douglas, the star who prints several books and novels – including The devil's dance and The gift – and which over time becomes sex symbol and unreachable hero, husband and dad of two children, Michael and Joel , from the marriage to actress Diana Dill. Too many titles to remember: from the same Spartacus, for which he fought in favor of writer Dalton Trumbo, blacklisted on suspicion of being a communist, at Two weeks in another city; from The strange love of Martha Ivers al western Challenge to the OK Corral . He always had the courage to say what he thought: “I have always been a nonconformist” he repeated in interviews, taking his risks and taking his responsibilities. This is the spirit that, in 1955, made him found Bryna Productions, his independent film company that turned him into the first star-system actor to take control of his career, focusing on rising movie stars like Stanley Kubrick. Between the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom and the award given to him by the Foreign Association in 1968 and that, in 2017, in turn conferred on daughter-in-law Catherine Zeta Jones, her only regret was to leave alone her Anne who, after more than sixty years of marriage, he will have to live without having him by his side anymore.
